THE HAGGARD I can't think straight with this shit hammering in my head. Images of bicycles and gym teachers and feminism invade my brain and I'm starting to question my sexuality. Who are these loud gay women who come to town and abduct narrow minded corporate zombies and turn them into modern art fags? The answer is Emily B. Kingan on guitar, sts on the drums, and together they are the Haggard. In September 2001, the Haggard released their second LP entitled "No Future." Musically this record is more complex than their debut, "A Bike City Called Greasy," perpetually loud and powerful. The lyrics have the same feminist conviction, words to scream at your teachers, parents, and bosses. Or sometimes, they are trapped in the unkind memories of unresolved love. The music comes from basements and all-ages clubs, after a million highway miles and sunflower seeds. The Haggard got their start in September 1998 in the town of Durham NC, home of their label, Mr. Lady, and queer compatriots the Butchies. Taking frequent trips up the east coast, they played their very first shows with friends the Need, the Third Sex, and Harum Scarum. In December 1998, they headed back to their home of Portland, OR, playing shows along the southern route. Now, it seems the Haggard are always on tour. It's like they live out of their mini-van. In the last two years they have completed three national tours, trekked across Germany and England, traveled endlessly between Vancouver, BC and Los Angeles, CA, and spent the month of January touring Australia. This July and August the Haggard will make it to Europe again to play Ladyfest London and Ladyfest Amsterdam. Myth - The Haggard are just as corporate as any other punk rock venture. Fact - Emily is a co-owner of a cooperative bike shop and sts makes a living making bike-tube bracelets. Myth - Emily and sts are girlfriends. Fact - They are just good friends. Myth - The Haggard secretly drive their tour van everywhere! Fact - They rode their bikes from Portland to San Francisco for gay ride and upon their arrival, played two shows in one night.
